Trips to Stafford

1 / 5

Stafford is located in Staffordshire in the western part of England, beside the River Sow. The town was established by Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great and Queen of Mercia (Lady of the Mercians) in the year 913. Castles, manors, grand buildings, art galleries, and delightful surroundings fill the area. Get inspired and find peace during your holiday in Stafford, with its surrounding lush landscapes.

To the south (approximately 17 miles) lies the larger city of Birmingham, along with surrounding towns such as Stoke-on-Trent and Cannock, as well as smaller locales like Uttoxeter and Newport. England boasts an extensive transport network, and the M6 motorway runs just outside Stafford, making it easy to take short trips to nearby locations.

Just about 20 miles northeast of Stafford (only a 45-minute drive) is Alton Towers, a popular attraction for families. Alton Towers features a theme park with numerous rides, roller coasters, green spaces, and playgrounds. The other section of Alton Towers is the water park, complete with water slides, whirlpool baths, realistic beaches, and pools. There's also a lovely spa area. Enjoy the park's thrilling adventures over a full day at Alton Towers.

If you choose to stay in Stafford, there are plenty of activities and attractions to explore. In the town center is the impressive St Mary’s Church (Collegiate Church of Saint Mary), and just a short walk away is the town's oldest building, St Chad's Church. Built around the 12th century, St Chad's is an architecturally remarkable building. Across Greengate Street is the largest timber-framed townhouse in England, the Ancient High House. Built in 1595, it now serves as a museum and art gallery with various exhibitions.

Stafford Castle, built in 1090, has been rebuilt and restored over the years. The castle features a visitor center with audio installations, medieval artifacts, and tools. Outside, there is an ancient herb garden, and every summer, a Shakespeare production is staged in the castle grounds. The castle is a landmark of Stafford and can be seen from the M6 motorway. Other attractions in the town include the Shire Hall, British Wildlife Rescue Centre, Broad Eye Windmill, Ingestre Hall, and Mill Meece Pumping Station.
