Trips to Bad Gastein

1 / 15

Nestled within a stunning national park amidst Austria's highest mountains, the Gastein Valley comprises the towns of Dorfgastein, Bad Hofgastein, Bad Gastein, and Böckstein. These have been renowned spa towns since the 1300s, celebrated for their healing waters and radon caves, contributing to their unique charm and elegance. In winter, the area boasts a delightful and varied ski system catering to all preferences.

Bad Gastein is the largest and most famous town in the valley, offering grand buildings by the waterfall and the liveliest nightlife. Bad Hofgastein is an exclusive spa town with a cozy town center. Böckstein, the smallest and highest village, features genuine old buildings and a tight-knit community feel.

All towns in the valley provide a wide selection of restaurants offering both international and local cuisine.

Forest Skiing and Sun-Drenched Slopes

The Gastein Valley is served by four lift systems and is considered one of Austria's largest ski areas, providing everything from challenging forest runs to sun-drenched wide slopes, spanning more than 200 km of groomed pistes. Despite the relatively low altitude, snow conditions are usually favorable, and the variety of runs is impressive.

  • Schlossalm - Angertal - Stubnerkogel (860 - 2,300 m)

This is the largest interconnected ski area with slopes offering more than a thousand meters of elevation difference. It features varied skiing within a perfect network of modern lifts and gondolas, ideal for experienced skiers. Beginners are recommended to start with the Judaulift in the Angertal ski area. A particularly popular run is the Hohe Scharte Nord (descent H 1 on the piste map) - 8 km long, with a vertical drop of 1,440 m, one of the longest descents in the Eastern Alps.

  • Sportgastein (1,590-2,650 m)

Sportgastein is a memorable destination. With skiing up to nearly 2,700 m, it offers a natural high-alpine terrain experience. Adventurous skiers can try the "Nordabfahrt" in pristine conditions (with a ski guide).

  • Graukogel (1,079-2,007 m)

Graukogel presents a lengthy and challenging descent, great for those seeking a thrill. Much of the skiing is in forested areas, providing wind protection. In poor visibility, it also offers better orientation. However, there are no direct lift connections to other ski systems.

  • Dorfgastein – Grossarltal (850-2,003 m)

The first ski slope in the Gastein Valley offers plenty for families, with varied descents for beginners and more advanced skiers. The Gipfelbahn - Fulseck lift takes you to the highest point of this system, offering spectacular views of Großglockner and across to the Dachstein.

Whichever system you choose, you'll find many cozy and unique mountain huts where tired legs can take a much-needed break.
