Trips to Derby

1 / 6

Derby in the East Midlands of England has a long history dating back to the year 50 when the settlement began to grow. The winding River Derwent, which beautifully cuts through the city today, has historically attracted numerous invaders. The area was first occupied by Romans, followed by Anglo-Saxons, and finally by Vikings in the year 875.

In the early 18th century, the power of the River Derwent was harnessed to build several silk mills. These mills used the river’s strong currents to operate heavy weaving machinery. Today, the old silk mill known as Derby Silk Mill is a museum that showcases Derby's industrial history.

Art and culture enthusiasts should not miss the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. It houses large collections of works by the English portrait and landscape painter Joseph Wright of Derby.

Derby is renowned for its porcelain industry, home to one of the world's most exclusive porcelain manufacturers: The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company, often referred to simply as Royal Crown Derby. Additionally, Derby is known for the production of car and aircraft engines under the brand Rolls-Royce.

The city's most popular landmark and a symbol of Derby is the Cathedral of All Saints, also known as Derby Cathedral. Dating back to the mid-900s, the cathedral features a beautifully decorated portal and an impressive tower. The streets around the cathedral boast unique independent shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, and remarkable art and cultural venues, as well as historical attractions.

Derby's Surroundings

On the outskirts of Derby, there are several pleasant parks and natural areas. To the northwest, you'll find Kedleston Park and the beautiful exhibition hall, Kedleston Hall, located at the heart of the park. A day trip can include exploring the exhibits at Kedleston Hall and enjoying a walk in the untouched 200-year-old parkland.

The area also features several golf courses, including Kedleston Park Golf Club, Allestree Park Golf Course, and Derby Golf Centre. Besides golf, hiking and cycling are popular activities. Toward Peak District National Park, there are numerous scenic cycling routes and hiking trails through the historic, expansive woods. Visitors can also try rock climbing and horseback riding. The Derby area offers plenty of options for those seeking an active holiday.
